Cross Examination: Does God Have Free Will?

I’ve been thinking about God’s free will and omniscience over the last few weeks. This was prompted, as a good many discussions and thoughts are, by one of my commenters, boomSLANG, who also prompted an earlier post about omniscience and omnipotence.

Cross Examination: The Cosmological Argument

The cosmological argument is a classic philosophical argument for a First Cause to the universe, which is usually extended to be an argument for a god that created the universe. It has been used for centuries in many different ways. I’ve run across this argument several times in my Cross Examination investigation.

Cross Examination: Faith and Belief

Many of the disagreements that have arisen in the course of this Cross Examination series have come up either due to a lack of definition, or because of a difference in definition. For example, the difference between “absolute omnipotence” and “essential omnipotence” led some to make the statement that “God cannot be both omnipotent and omniscient,” a claim which I wrote about in a previous post.

From the Comments: God can’t be both omnipotent and omniscient

One of my most faithful commenters in my Christianity category, boomSLANG (which is apparently a small venomous snake native to sub-Saharan Africa), posted this comment in my recent post about the existence of a moral law:

Cross Examination: Is There a Moral Law?

The existence of a moral law is something that I’ve pondered for quite a while, in many different contexts. On the one hand, you have the religious, who say that there is a moral law. On the other, you have moral relativists (and others) who say that morality is not fixed (or that it evolves).

Cross Examination: The Will to Believe

determinism2

My Cross Examination series has led me to read some of the more recent popular books regarding atheism and Christianity. It seems like the popular books do not often have the evidence that I’m looking for, on either side of the debate, but they have pointed me towards some of the more fundamental, though more obscure, sources of the debate.

Book Review: Letter to a Christian Nation

Sam Harris2

As promised, I began my book study in my “Cross Examination” series with the book, “Letter to a Christian Nation” by the famed atheist author, Sam Harris. It was a short read (less than a hundred pages), and it adequately (though unpersuasively) lays out the case against Christianity.

The God Debate II

Harris-Craig

I recently watched this video, called “The God Debate II: Is God Good?,” which was sponsored by the Notre Dame College of Arts and Letters in April. The debate is between Sam Harris, whose book “Letter to a Christian Nation” I am currently reading…

Cross Examination: Is the Universe Eternal?

Universe2

One of the most vexing and foundational questions that I’ve come across in my study of Christianity: “Is the Universe eternal?” The answer to that question has huge ramifications, both for science and for people that believe in a personal God.

What Is Truth?

What Is Truth

One of the questions that I have consistently encountered as I have begun to work my way through examining my faith is this: What is truth? Some related questions to this one are: Can truth be known? Who determines truth? Can truths about God be known? Is truth absolute or relative?
